BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 1. A joint railway line between Iran, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye will be beneficial for the three countries as well as the region and will open up broad economic prospects, the Governor of Iran's West Azerbaijan Province, Reza Rahmani told Trend.
According to him, currently, one of the most important projects is the railway project between Iran, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye. The railway line that will connect the common borders of these three countries is of great importance, and can contribute to both the development of the region and a great development in freight transportation.
Rahmani pointed out that this railway line can operate within the framework of the East-West Corridor. One route of the railway line on the East-West Corridor goes north along the Caspian Sea coast. The second route is a railway line that can continue through West Azerbaijan Province to both the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan and Türkiye. Currently, construction of a railway line from Kars to the border, which is approximately 230 km long, is ongoing on the Turkish side.
The Iranian governor added that if a railway is built on the Iranian side from Marand to Evoglu and the border of the three countries, and if the Nakhchivan railway line is also connected to the aforementioned railway line, it will be possible to transport cargo to Europe and vice versa via this railway.
A railway line exists between the East Azerbaijan Province, located in the northeast of Iran, and Nakhchivan. The railway line mentioned by the governor of the West Azerbaijan Province is considered a separate route.
