Jordan's King Abdullah II flew to Qatar on Wednesday, for his second visit to the oil-rich Gulf region this week, dpa reported.

The monarch will have talks with Qatar's ruler Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani on latest developments in the region and bilateral cooperation, a royal court statement said.

King Abdullah visited Kuwait on Monday where he had talks with its Emir, Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah.

Jordan is intensifying efforts to obtain economic aid from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member states to prop up its beleaguered economy which has been under increasing pressure from a growing public budget deficit and a steep energy bill, diplomats said.

King Abdullah is also at pains to clear any hurdles that might impede his country's admission to the GCC, they added.

Jordanian Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh said earlier this week that his first meeting with his GCC counterparts would be held in Saudi Arabia early in September to lay down the parameters for Amman's admission to the Arab political bloc.

King Abdullah was also expected to discuss the deteriorating situation in Syria after two GCC states, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, summoned their envoys from Damascus as a sign of protest over the bloody crackdown on Syrian protesters.

The Syrian community in Jordan, backed by Jordanian supporters, planned a demonstration in front of the Syrian embassy in Amman after Ramadan night prayers Wednesday to press the Jordanian government to withdraw its ambassador from Damascus, activists said.
