Bahrain on Sunday tightened security around embassies in the country after an explosion occurred near the British embassy in the capital Manama, said a senior security official, DPA reported.

"We have increased security as a precaution," the spokesman for the Interior Ministry Salah Salem told reporters.

The blast hit a minibus parked around 50 metres from the British embassy in the area of Ras Rumman, he added.

"The explosion was caused by a highly explosive package placed near the front tyre of the minibus," Salem said.

It caused no casualties, but damaged five cars and left a crater, according to the official.

He did not comment on who might have been behind the blast, saying only: "Investigations are still under way."

The small Gulf kingdom was gripped earlier this year by pro-reform protests, which the government blamed on Iran.
