I do not regret murdering Azer Ismayilov, head of the Drug Enforcement Department," Haji Mammadov, ex-officer of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Internal Ministry of Azerbaijan, said at his court trial in the Appeal Court on 9 October.
Mammadov said he was alarmed at the death of Azar Ismaylov, the head of the Drug Enforcement Department at the Internal Ministry. Ismayilov persecuted and wanted to murder Mammadov. Before murdering him, Mammadov had a 20 minute talk with Ismayilov and then killed him with a knife. The murder scene was photographed.
Mammadov said that he committed crimes to order. The names of the people who ordered the assassinations of the Vice-President of AFFA, Fatulla Huseynov, the Prosecutor of the Central Prosecutor Office, Rovshan Aliyev, and the kidnapping of the president of the International Bank, Jahangir Hajiyev's wife are well known to relatives of the dead.
"If I name the names of the people who ordered the assassinations there will be no room for them in court. There are people attending this trial who know who ordered the assassinations," Mammadov said.
Mammadov said part of the money he received for the kidnapping was given to Zakir Nasirov of the Central Criminal Investigation Department at the Internal Ministry. Mammadov said he did not plan to murder one of the members of his gang, Shairkhan Abiyev. "I decided to murder Shairkhan after I found out he wanted to kill me. I drugged him after binding his arms. First I thought to I would talk to him and then kill him. I took him to Gusar region. However, he died from an overdose," Mammadov said.
Mehman Samadov and Novruz Ismaylov would have been charged of producing false documents if they had been alive. "I murdered them because they talked about letting the cat out of the bag," Mammadov said he did not want pressure or force by police.
The Court ruled Mammadov's property was to be seized and he was sentenced to life imprisonment. Members of the gang Farhad Mammadbayov (seizure of property), Eldar Rahimov (seizure of property), Malik Mammadov (seizure of property), Huseyin Abdulvahabov (seizure of property), Zakir Nasirov (seizure of property), Kamil Sadraddinov (seizure of property), Musa Dabuyev, Aslanbay Chintamirov, Yagir Mammadov were sentenced to life imprisonment. The other defendants Nizami Abdullayev (seizure of property), Sidak Abdulvahabov, Rovshan Agayev were sentenced to15 years, Naila Guliyeva (seizure of property) and 13 years, Adalat Asadullayev and Novruz Nuriyev sentenced to 12 years, Aligulu Guliyev, Nishad Ismayilov sentenced to 10 years, Faik Guliyev, Elchin Aliyev (seizure of property) and 9 years, Mehman Hasanov, Fariz Gamidov and Elshan Mirzayev to 8 years.
Agil Huseynov and Azar Aliyev were given a two year suspended sentence. The criminal case against Ibrahim Bagirov concerning a fine for state damage was suspended.
