Britain is officially in recession after its economy shrank for two successive quarters, according to figures released by the government on Friday.

Britain's gross domestic product fell by an estimated 1.5 per cent in the final three months of 2008, following on from a 0.6-per-cent decrease in GDP in the third quarter, the Office for National Statistics said.

The figures represent the worst performance in the British economy since 1980, reported dpa
