Azerbaijan will be able to export electricity in three different directions in the future, deputy head of the State Agency of Azerbaijan on Alternative and Renewable Energy Sources Jamil Melikov told Trend.
He said that the use of large wind potential in the Caspian Sea in the future will allow Azerbaijan to become a major exporter of electricity.
"The first step towards this will be the construction of wind farm based on the platforms in the Caspian Sea," he said. "In the future, Azerbaijan will be able to export this energy."
Speaking about the possible export destinations, Melikov said that Azerbaijan has good export transmission lines through Iran, Russia and Georgia."
"We can export electricity in any direction via these power lines," the deputy head of the state agency said. "For example, one can sell it through Iran to Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, via Georgia to Turkey, and from there to Europe. Electricity can be exported to the CIS countries through Russia. Moreover, Russia itself is a very attractive market."
Currently, the electricity power system of Azerbaijan is about 7.2 megawatts.
The total potential of alternative and renewable energy sources in Azerbaijan exceeds 12,000 megawatts.
Most of the country's potential in this area accounts for solar energy, and this potential is estimated at 5,000 megawatts.
The wind power accounts for 4,500 megawatts, biomass - 1,500 megawatts, geothermal energy - 800 megawatts, while the remaining 350 megawatts account for the potential for small hydro power plants.
