Wheat production in Iran’s Khuzestan province will reach 2.5 million tons by March 21, 2023, said Mohammad Ghaseminejad, deputy director of the Khuzestan Agriculture Department, Trend reports via IRNA.
Ghaseminejad noted that according to the Iranian national project, wheat harvest in Khuzestan province will grow by 400,000 tons of grain annually.
This will also help to increase the crop area, farmers’ incomes and strengthen Iran’s food safety, the deputy director added.
Ghaseminejad said that as part of this project, the area under wheat will triple next year.
The deputy director noted that in Khuzestan, wheat harvest is 4.4 tons per irrigated hectare, adding that with the implementation of this project, wheat harvest will increase to 6.5 tons per hectare.
This sowing year, wheat was sown on 162,000 hectares of irrigated areas and on 380,000 hectares of dry lands in Khuzestan province and about 1.8 million tons of wheat are planned to be harvested this year. Some 1.6 million tons of this volume will be purchased from farmers under guarantees.
Last sowing year, about 200,000 hectares of wheat were sown in the province, and 1.6 million tons of wheat were harvested. Some 1.3 million tons of this volume were purchased from farmers under guarantees.
Agricultural products worth about 200 trillion rials (about $4.7 billion) are harvested in Khuzestan province, and about 13 percent of Iran’s agricultural products account for this province.
