Ukraine has proposed that Kazakhstan participate in the joint construction of a new refinery on the Black Sea, Ukrainian Ambassador to Kazakhstan Nikolai Selivon said.
"In 2009, we proposed to Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev an interesting project to build a new refinery in Ukraine, in which Kazakhstan play a part for the first time," he said.
According to the official, six oil refineries oil operate in Ukraine that are technologically-oriented on processing Russian oil.
"Today we plan a new refinery that will be able to process different crude oil, including Kazakh oil," the ambassador said.
According to the official, Ukraine proposed Brody as the future port area.
"There is another important nuance that would be of interest for the Kazakh side to take part in this project. In a short time, Ukraine intends to sign an association agreement with the EU. A key part of this will be an agreement on a free trade zone with the EU that will enable the production from the refinery to be sold in Europe without any tariffs or quotas," he added.
In early 2000, Kazakhstan purchased shares in an oil refinery in Kherson.
