Azerbaijan and Iran plan to build a new bridge to increase both passenger and cargo traffic, Deputy Minister of Iranian Roads and Urban Development and CEO of the Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructures Company (CDTIC) Kheirollah Khademi said, Trend reports citing the ministry.
He made the remark during a meeting with officials of the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport of Azerbaijan in Iran's Astara County.
According to Khademi, during today's meeting with the delegation from friendly and brotherly Azerbaijan, there was an exchange of views on the establishment of infrastructure in the neutral zone and an agreement on the construction of a new bridge over the Astarachay was reached.
“At the same time, the talks on the selection of a contractor for the construction of the bridge and the provision of funding were successful. An agreement in this regard is expected to be signed at the next meeting to be held in Azerbaijan with the participation of the Iranian Minister of Roads and Urban Development,” he added.
The deputy minister noted that the new bridge will be 97 meters long and 32 meters wide. The bridge will have two sidewalks and a four-lane road. The construction of the bridge will cost 5 million euros. Each country will provide 50 percent of these funds.
The CEO stressed that a part of the railway and cargo terminal was built in Iran three years ago. At present, cargo is transited through Azerbaijan by railway.
“During the meeting, it was decided to complete the construction of the cargo terminal and eliminate existing obstacles. Work on improving the terminal will be accelerated,” Khademi said.
