BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 26. The current Iranian government (which has been power since August 2021) intends to put into operation new railway lines in the country under 9 projects, Deputy Minister of Iran's Roads and Urban Development, and the CEO of Construction and Development of Transportation Infrastructure Company (CDTIC) Kheirollah Khademi told Mehr News Agency, Trend reports.
The deputy minister noted that the total length of railway lines to be commissioned in the country within 9 projects is 1,250 kilometers. In general, there is more than 50 percent physical progress on the construction of the mentioned railway lines.
“Over the past 10 years, an average of 200 kilometers of railway lines a year have been put into operation in the country. If 1,250 kilometers of railway lines are put into operation in the country within 4 years, there 1.5 times increase will be recorded,” he added.
According to Khademi, currently, there are 2,200 kilometers of railway lines being built in Iran, which cover the important transport corridors passing through the country and create links with other countries.
The CEO also said that one of these railways is the Rasht-Astara railway line, located in the International North-South Transport Corridor, which will connect the Iranian railways to the Azerbaijani railway, the Russian railway, and finally to Europe.
“One of the other important railway lines is the Chabahar-Zahedan railway line. So that the railway line will create railway link from Chabahar in southern Iran to Sarakhs on the border with Turkmenistan,” Khademi pointed out.
The deputy minister also pointed out that more than 14,200 kilometers of railway lines are currently in operation in the country. As part of a long-term program, it is planned to build 9,500 kilometers of railway lines.
