Democratic Reforms Party of Azerbaijan Determines Form of Participation in Presidential Elections

Azerbaijan, Baku, 19 July/ Trend , corr J. Babayeva/ The Democratic Reforms Party of Azerbaijan (DRP) has determined the form of participation in the upcoming presidential elections. "DFP will only observe elections and will fight for the democratic elections," Asim Mollazade, chairman of the party and MP said in the second conference of the party in Baku.

The presidential elections in Azerbaijan will be held on 15 October 2008. The chairman of the Musavat party Isa Gambar, chairman of Azerbaijan Democratic Party Sardar Jalaloglu, and chairman of the Green Party Mais Gulaliyev have decided to participate in the presidential elections. The political expert Eldar Namazov stated that he would run for presidency independently. Governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) is going nominate country's current President Ilham Aliyev. The Azadlig bloc, which unites three opposition parties -Popular Front party, Citizen and Development party and Liberal party, will boycott the presidential elections. The bloc will make a final decision in its meeting.

According to Mollazade, the Political Council of the party has resolved to take part in the presidential elections. "Every political party should attend elections even under the hardest conditions. The party which do not attend elections casts doubts on its political existence. DRP does not see any candidate worth its support among the candidates from the opposition," DRP chairman said.

Party will observe presidential elections both within the country and abroad. "The party has opportunities to observe election within the country. The party has large international contacts to observe it abroad as well. DRP will observe elections together with the international organizations," he said.

According to Mollazade, the party is mainly focused on 2010 parliament elections. "The main elections for the party are parliamentary elections. We will promote reforms in legislative body of Azerbaijan by nominating candidates from every constituency," Mollazade said.

During the conference, DRP elected Asim Mollazade chairman by majority of votes. The members for the Number, Mandate, Drafting Committees, Political Council and Visiting Committee were elected as well.

Democratic Reforms Party of Azerbaijan was established in 2005. Party's program and activity aims at realizing liberal values. The Chairman of the Party is Asim Mollazade. The first conference of the party was held on 4 July 2005.
