Azerbaijan, Baku, Jan. 6/ Trend , K. Zarbaliyeva/ Traffic on roads near mosques will be restricted in Azerbaijan's capital city on the day of Ashura (the 10th day of month of Muharram).
The restriction of traffic aims at providing security of drivers and pedestrians, Vagif Asadov, spokesperson for Central Traffic Police Office at the Baku Central Police Department, told Trend .
The police will reinforce its control on Day of Ashura.
Additional police officers will provide security near mosques on this day.
The Caucasus Muslims Clerical Board has issued fatwa about start of the month of Muharram Dec. 29, 2009. The Day of Ashura will be marked Jan. 7.
It is commemorated by the Shi'a as a day of mourning for the martyrdom of Husayn ibn Ali, the grandson of the Islamic prophet Muhammad at the Battle of Karbala on 10 Muharram in the year 61 AH.
Yazid I was in power then and wanted the Bay'ah (allegiance) of Husayn ibn Ali. Many Muslims believe Yazid was openly going against the teachings of Islam in public and changing the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad.
The tragedy in Karabala impressed people a lot. Husayn was announced great martyr and Karbala - shrine of Muslims.
