BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 8. Azerbaijan’s Araz Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) generated 65,700 kWh of electricity in 2024, the country’s State Energy Service of Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic told Trend.
The Araz HPP, located on the Araz River—Azerbaijan's second-largest river—is situated 5 kilometers downstream from the point where its left tributary, the Nakhchivan River, joins, on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran.
The station, with a designed capacity of 22 megawatts, began its trial operations on October 3, 1971, and was fully operational by 1973. It is capable of producing 86.7 million kWh of electricity annually. Over the years, the Araz HPP has played a crucial role in meeting the energy demands of the population and the country's economy. The station, classified as a medium-pressure facility, operates with closed-type construction.
