Tehran, Iran, February 4

By Mehdi Sepahvand - Trend:

Domestic gas consumption registered the new record of 525 mcm/d after a wave of cold hit Iran.

Yet, there has been no gas outage or decline of pressure, National Iranian Gas Company spokesman Majid Bujarzadeh told Mehr news agency February 4.

Nevertheless, he said, 80 mcm of gas was delivered to large industries and 70 mcm to power plants as well.

However, there are reports from some northern provinces, Golestan in particular, about scattered instances of gas outage.

Regarding the reports, Bujarzadeh said the gas company has cut gas supply to some public places such as CNG stations, hospitals, and government headquarters, instead providing them with liquefied gas.

He added that crisis committees have been formed in Golestan and Mazandaran provinces to handle the situation.

Iran produces 700 mcm of sweet gas a day. Iran used to import gas from Turkmenistan for domestic consumption in its northern provinces. Turkmenistan cut gas deliveries to Iran due to a 9-year delay in payments of $1.8 billion worth of debts in the beginning of the year.

According to a document prepared by Iran’s Oil Ministry and seen by Trend, the housing sector consumed about 165 mcm/d of gas in spring and summer, that is, in the first half of the current fiscal year that started on March 21, 2016.

Housing sector in Iran consumes about 46 percent of Iran’s total sweet gas production each year.
