BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 1. The April battles
are widely regarded as the beginning of a qualitatively new phase
in the Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict and are interpreted by many
analysts as a strategic “key” that paved the way for the eventual
victory in Karabakh, political analyst Azer Garayev told Trend.
According to him, the clashes first and foremost shattered the
long-standing perception that the status quo was unchangeable.
“Although relative stability had prevailed along the line of
contact after 1994, the intense clashes in April 2016 demonstrated
that the military balance was not fixed and could shift at any
moment. The Azerbaijani Army’s swift control over certain strategic
heights and positions revealed that the real balance of power had
changed. This sent a strong signal to both regional countries and
international mediators.
From a military-strategic perspective, the April battles also
served as a kind of ‘pilot model.’ At this stage, the use of modern
technologies, particularly unmanned aerial vehicles, reconnaissance
tools, and high-precision strike systems, was expanded. Flexible
decision-making, coordination among different branches of the armed
forces, and rapid offensive tactics were tested during the
operations. This experience was later applied in a more systematic
and large-scale manner during the Second Karabakh War,” he
said.
Garayev noted that another important aspect of the April battles
was their psychological and societal impact.
“Public confidence in victory in Azerbaijan strengthened
significantly, and trust in the army increased. This was not only a
factor of internal motivation but also played an important role in
political decision-making. On the other hand, for Armenia, these
events exposed weaknesses in the defense line and led to a
reassessment of its security concept. On the geopolitical level,
the April battles also produced serious consequences. The
international perception of the conflict as ‘frozen’ began to
change. Major powers and regional actors realized that maintaining
the status quo might not be possible in the long term. This, in
turn, created new dynamics in both diplomatic processes and the
military strategies of the parties,” he added.
The analyst emphasized that one of the most important points is
that the April battles were both a tactical success and a strategic
lesson for Azerbaijan.
“The experience gained at this stage, the role of intelligence,
technological superiority, rapid maneuvering, and coordination,
formed the foundation of the operations carried out in 2020. The
results achieved during the 44-day war were not accidental but
rather a logical continuation of the concept shaped in previous
years, particularly in 2016. Therefore, it is not sufficient to
view the April battles merely as a local military clash. This event
became a turning point in the Azerbaijan-Armenia confrontation and
played a decisive role in shaping future military strategy,
psychological advantage, and political will. For this reason, it is
often described as a ‘key stage’ on the path to victory in
Karabakh,” the political analyst concluded.
