TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, July 19. KfW Bank is preparing to sign agreements to finance investment projects in the water supply and sanitation sectors in the Surkhandarya and Fergana regions, in cooperation with JSC Uzsuvtaminot, a source at KfW Bank told Trend.
“The main goal of the projects is to improve the living conditions of the population and contribute to climate and natural resource protection by expanding the coverage and efficiency of sewage systems, improving the quality of drinking water and wastewater treatment, reducing water losses and energy consumption, and ensuring the sustainable operation of infrastructure,” the source noted.
The signing of loan and grant agreements is scheduled for early 2026. The total funding will amount to 130 million euro in loans and 67 million euro in grants.
In addition, KfW plans to provide Uzbekistan with a targeted loan in 2025 to support reforms in the areas of social protection, gender equality, and climate protection.
“We plan to conclude loan agreements in November 2025 and continue cooperation in 2026. The loan amount will be 200 million euro,” a bank representative stated.
“The German side places special emphasis on reforms in the field of social protection, particularly the establishment of a social insurance system in Uzbekistan. Both German development organizations KfW and GIZ are providing comprehensive support in this area. In addition to social protection reforms, the policy-based loans (PBLs) will also support reforms promoting Uzbekistan’s low-carbon transition and fostering gender equality,” the source added.
Germany’s cooperation with Uzbekistan began in 1993. Since then, the total volume of investments under financial cooperation has exceeded 1 billion euro. Today, KfW’s activities in the country cover key areas such as healthcare, technical and vocational education and training (TVET), sustainable urban development, and support for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs).
