Uzbekistan Temir Yollari (Uzbekistan Railways) state joint stock railway company and the Afghan Ministry of Public Works signed a $129 million contract on construction of railway Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif, the Uzbek company reported.
Uzbekistan Temir Yollari won the tender for the construction of the 75 kilometers railroad from Hairatan to Mazar-e-Sharif, announced by the Government of Afghanistan. The project will be implemented by the second half of 2010. The existing station infrastructure Hairatan will be modernized, a transshipment terminal will be built within the project.
The project will be financed due to grant of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for $165 million and own resources of Afghanistan Government for $5 million.
On Nov. 20, the Government of Uzbekistan adopted a special resolution determining the measures for implementing the project "Design, construction, installation and commissioning of the railway between Hairatan and Mazar-e-Sharif."
