BAKU, Azerbaijan, September 6. The construction of the 271-km-long Birjand-Younesi railway line in Iran’s South Khorasan Province, of which construction was stopped due to lack of funds, has been restarted as of September 6, 2023, Trend reports.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash and other officials attended the event held in South Khorasan Province (north-eastern Iran) in connection with the start of the construction of this railway.
According to the report, 88 kilometers of the mentioned railway line are in Razavi Khorasan Province, and 183 kilometers are in South Khorasan Province.
Speaking at the mentioned event, Mirmohammad Modi, the head of roads and urban development department of Iran's South Khorasan Province, said that after the current government of Iran came to power in the country (since August 2021), the construction of the Zahedan-Birjand-Mashhad railway was put in the spotlight. In this regard, 180 trillion rials (about $4.28 billion) has been allocated from the funds obtained from the sale of crude oil for the construction of the Birjand-Younesi railway line.
Modi added that Birjand-Younesi railway line is a part of Zahedan-Birjand-Mashhad railway line. The length of the Zahedan-Birjand-Mashhad railway line, which will connect the city of Zahedan in Sistan and Baluchistan Province with the city of Mashhad in Razavi Khorasan Province, will be 910 km. Of this, 432 kilometers will be located in South Khorasan Province.
He also pointed out that construction work of the Zahedan-Birjand-Mashhad railway line in South Khorasan Province has been divided into 13 parts and contractor companies have been selected.
“In recent years, small-sized operations on the construction of the Birjand-Younesi railway line were carried out. As of today, the focus will be on the rapid continuation of the construction of this railway line,” Modi noted.
Overall, the length of railway lines in Iran is currently 14,984 kilometers.
