BAKU, Azerbaijan, January 6. During the third quarter of 2023, the US sustained its coal imports, with the majority originating from Colombia (61.9 percent) and Canada (23 percent), Trend reports.
Notably, according to the US Energy Information Administration Agency (EIA), there were no recorded imports from Australia or Indonesia during this period.
The cumulative US coal imports for the third quarter reached 1 million short tons (MMst). Indicative of market dynamics, the average price of these coal imports throughout the same quarter was reported at $143.34 per short ton.
Meanwhile, in the reporting period of 2023, the US witnessed a significant surge in coal consumption, reaching a total of 131.9 MMst. This marked a substantial 44.2-percent increase compared to the 91.5 MMst reported in the preceding quarter of 2023.
However, this volume remained 9.6 percent lower than the 145.9 MMst recorded in the third quarter of 2022. Notably, the electric power sector played a pivotal role, contributing to approximately 93 percent of the overall US coal consumption during the third quarter of 2023.
