ASTANA, Kazakhstan, November 11. Kazakhstan is
set to obtain approximately 11 billion cubic meters of water from
other Central Asian countries, Trend reports.
Nurzhan Nurzhigitov represented Kazakhstan's interests at the 87th
session of the Interstate Coordination Water Management Commission
(ICWMC), which took place in Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.
The meeting was also attended by the heads of water management
agencies from Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, while
Kyrgyzstan participated as an observer.
As it was agreed during the session, Kazakhstan will receive this amount of water through the Syr Darya River by April of next year, as agreed upon by Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation of Kazakhstan, Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, during talks with representatives from Central Asian countries.
Thus, by April 1, 2025, it is expected that 11 billion cubic meters of water will flow into the Shardara Reservoir. This will allow Kazakhstan to accumulate the necessary water volume for the 2025 irrigation season in the southern part of the country.
In addition, the meeting participants approved forecast schedules for the operation modes of reservoirs in the basins of the Syr Darya and Amu Darya rivers, as well as water supply limits for Central Asian countries for the 2024-2025 autumn-winter period.
In early June, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan signed an agreement on cooperation in the construction of the Kambaratinskaya HPP-1, a project dating back to Soviet times. In August, it was reported that China promised to help Kazakhstan protect Lake Balkhash. The next, 88th session of the ICWMC will take place in the first quarter of 2025 in Tajikistan's Dushanbe.
