TASHKENT, Uzbekistan, May 28. Uzbekistan is actively collaborating with international financial institutions on 21 ongoing projects in the drinking water supply sector, with $800 million worth of work expected to be completed this year, including the commissioning of 138 hydrotechnical facilities, Trend reports.
A highly effective pre-project financing mechanism has been developed in partnership with the Asian Development Bank and the German Development Bank. By selecting contractors and designers in advance, this approach accelerates the practical implementation of projects. It was noted that this model should be applied to all future projects.
To modernize and digitalize the water system, Uzbekistan has secured $125 million from the Asian Development Bank. Over the next five years, 4,800 smart meters and approximately 3,000 telemetry systems will be installed at major water facilities and main pipelines as part of this project.
Currently, 81 percent of communities in Uzbekistan have access to drinking water, while the water drainage system serves 20 percent of the population. Significant infrastructure developments are planned for this year, including the construction of 1,619 kilometers of water supply networks and 521 kilometers of sewage systems. Additionally, 162 infrastructure projects are set for construction and modernization, which will provide 715,000 people with access to clean drinking water for the first time, and connect 675,000 more to sewage services.
