If Iran could use water technology to increase water productivity and production efficiency, there is no need for extra-territorial cultivation, an economics professor at Allameh Tabataba'i University Abdul Majid Sheikhi told Trend.
"The reason of cross-border cultivation plan is drought and lack of water. Iran is not the only country which is facing this problem,” he said.
He mentioned that if we look at the remnants of the burnt city (Shahr-e Sukhteh), the main reason for the destruction of the city was the lack of water," he added. “Today, this problem is not specific to Iran and is present in most parts of the world, for example, in 2007, the drought in the southern Hemisphere has caused a crumble in the grain market and doubled its price.”
It is unfortunate that water efficiency in the country is about 40 percent, and we should not seek a solution other than increasing water efficiency," said the professor.
“In Iran's agricultural history, the aqueduct industry is a method used to increase water efficiency, which is also used in North African countries. Now, in order to increase water efficiency, modern methods such as drip irrigation and narrow strip irrigation should be used to increase water efficiency by up to 4 times," he said.” The new methods of agricultural production can be doubled in the agricultural process.”
Sheikhi mentioned that by doubling the productivity of water the production output will reach to its goal and the problem of dehydration will be eliminated.
"Extra-territorial cultivation is nonsense and not necessary, because that lands are not at our full control. This method should be used in very critical conditions, war and severe sanctions.”
Referring to the problem of the agricultural distribution system, he said that Iran must regulate, design and implement the model of the distribution system, and as long as this is not done, much of the agricultural production is wasted and, in fact, water is wasted too."
