Turkey will launch construction of a nuclear power stations without involvement of foreign specialists by 2040, the Turkish Aksam newspaper reported on Tuesday.
For the construction of nuclear power stations, Turkey will look at the experience of China, India, South Korea and Japan. This will enable Turkey will establish its own self built model of a nuclear power station by 2040.
Launch of the new reactor using uranium and thorium as fuel, is planned within the project.
The first Akkuyu nuclear power station will be constructed according the Russian project, including the building of four energy blocks with a WWER-1200 reactor. The agreement on the station's construction was signed on May 2010.
Capacity of each block amounts to 1200 megawatt, total capacity will be 4800 megawatt. The blocks are designed to be launched consistently with intervals of one year.
The tender for construction of a second nuclear power station in Sinop province is underway. Canada, China, South Korea and Japan are contenders.
The Turkish minister of energy and natural resources Taner Yildiz has stated that Turkish nuclear power stations will start production of electricity by 2019 and that the country is going to construct one more nuclear station by 2023.
