ASTANA, Kazakhstan, September 13. Kazakhstan has launched a project to increase the production capacity of the Shymkent oil refinery to 12 million tons of processed oil per year, Trend reports via the press service of Kazakhstan’s Prime Minister.
Prime Minister Oljas Bektenov was informed about the start of the project during a working visit to Shymkent city.
Currently, the refinery processes 6 million tons of oil annually, producing a range of products including automotive gasoline, diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas, and fuel oil. The modernization is expected to be completed by 2030.
Bektenov emphasized the importance of ensuring stability in the fuel market. He noted that the refinery's management and regional officials are focusing on enhancing processing quality and preventing the diversion and "grey export" of oil products.
Built in 1985, the Shymkent oil refinery accounts for 30 percent of the total volume of oil products produced by Kazakhstan’s three refineries.
The facility underwent a significant renovation and redevelopment project, completed in 2018, which raised the quality of its fuel to K-5 standards, improved environmental safety, and expanded its design capacity to 6 million tons per year.
