BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 5. Discussions are ongoing to resolve obstacles related to the volume of electricity to be exchanged and investment costs between Iran and Türkiye, Mehrdad Eqlimi, the director general of the foreign trade office of Iran's Power Generation and Distribution Company (TAVANIR), told reporters, Trend reports.

Eqlimi pointed out that the talks are also centered around picking a contractor company and laying the groundwork to kick off the electricity exchange.

The official added that a trial electricity exchange using HVDC BtB equipment was successfully conducted in Türkiye's Van city in the past Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through March 20, 2025), and an agreement was signed on the activation of electricity lines between the two countries.

He also mentioned that discussions are in the pipeline for the swap of 300 megawatts of electricity come summer this year.

Additionally, it was stated that Iran's total electricity production potential from all power plants (thermal, hydro, renewable, nuclear, and others) exceeds 93,000 megawatt hours, with 82 percent of this production coming from Thermal Power Plants (TPP).

To note, during the peak summer season, Iran encounters significant power deficits, necessitating the procurement of electrical energy from adjacent nations to mitigate the shortfall.
