Coast guards in a helicopter on Friday spotted the animal floating on a house roof 1.8 kilometres out to sea off Kesennuma in Miyagi prefecture, the Kyodo News agency reported, citing the Japan Coast Guard.
Three coast guards in a boat rescued the dog after it initially fled the helicopter and took refuge on other debris floating in the sea.
Officials said the dog ate biscuits and sausages on the boat after it was rescued.
A magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami hit north-east Japan on March 11, causing over 11,700 deaths.
