Kazakh banks increase portfolio of retail deposits

Over the last three months, banks in Kazakhstan observed growth of the deposit portfolio of retail deposits, according to the analytical service Ranking.kz.

Following the fall in oil prices in the summer of 2014, Kazakh banks have observed a reduction of portfolios on retail deposits. The stagnation period turned out to be the longest in the history of the market, namely, nine months (excluding the seasonal surge in December) - from August 2014 to April 2015, the report said.

During this period, the volume of deposits in banks decreased by 151 billion tenge (270.46 tenge = $1).

Since May 2015, the market started to win back positions. In just three months, the volume of retail deposits in banks of Kazakhstan increased by 125.7 billion tenge. The most significant increase was recorded in July, by 1.4 percent, to 4.43 trillion tenge.

Some 25 Kazakh banks of the 35 ones recorded the monthly growth in the portfolio.

The portfolio of retail deposits National Bank of Kazakhstan showed the most significant growth in July by 41.3 billion tenge, up to 876.7 billion tenge, which is 69 percent of the monthly growth in the second-tier banks. Thus, the bank has strengthened its positions on the market to 19.8 percent.

Work with individuals remains a priority of the bank. The share of retail deposits in the portfolio is 53.2 percent (with an average of banks of the second level of 39 percent).

The second place belongs to the duet of Kazkommertsbank and BTA. The growth of this index for the month amounted to 8.8 billion tenge, up to 924.2 billion tenge. The bank has reduced its share on the market: by 0.09 percent for the month, by 1.5 percent for the year, up to 20.9 percent. The share of deposits of individuals in the portfolio remained at around 40 percent, which is comparable with the average index for second-tier banks.

Bank CenterCredit wraps up the TOP-3 leaders, deposits of individuals in which increased by 7 billion tenge, up to 340.3 billion tenge. The share of retail deposits in the bank's portfolio remains almost unchanged since 2013 - at the level of 42-43 percent.
