BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan, August 2. In 2024, Kyrgyzstan will reduce coal imports for the Bishkek thermal power plant (TPP) by half, Energy Minister Taalaibek Ibraev announced at a press conference, Trend reports.
According to Ibraev, the Bishkek TPP requires 1 million tons of coal. This year, Kyrgyzstan plans to import only 250,000 tons of coal for the TPP, while 750,000 tons will be sourced from local mines.
Overall, the country needs 2.6 million tons of coal for various
uses:
- 312,200 tons for budgetary institutions,
- 1.334 million tons for residential needs,
- 100,800 tons for Kyrgyzzhilkomenergo state enterprise.
Ibraev also stated that President Sadyr Zhaparov has set a goal to achieve full coal import substitution within three years. The annual plan is to reduce coal imports from neighboring countries.
Overall, Kyrgyzstan generated and imported 9.08 billion kWh of electricity from January through June 2024. A total of 6.2 billion kWh were produced by the country’s hydropower stations, while 870 million kWh came from thermal power plants. The volume of electricity imports was 2.02 billion kWh.
