BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 20. Iran’s hydroelectric power plants (HPPs) have generated 1,400 gigawatt-hours of electricity, which has been delivered to the national power grid since the beginning of the current Iranian year (March 21, 2025), Hossein Alavi, an official from the Iran Water Resources and Energy Development Company (IWREDC), told reporters, Trend reports.
He noted that the total electricity generation capacity of the country’s HPPs stands at 12,000 megawatts, of which 9,000 megawatts have been developed by the IWREDC.
Alavi said that currently, the company operates HPPs with a combined capacity of 3,500 megawatts.
Looking ahead, Alavi noted that electricity generation at HPPs during the summer season (from June 22 through September 22, 2025), is expected to reach 1,550 gigawatt-hours, marking a 38 percent decrease compared to the same period last year (from June 21 through September 21, 2024).
“An unprecedented drought in the country, along with a 50 percent decline in water levels of rivers feeding the reservoirs where our hydro plants are located, has had a severe impact on electricity production,” he said.
Iran’s electricity supply comes from thermal power plants, a nuclear power plant, solar and wind power plants, and hydroelectric power plants. Thermal power plants currently account for more than 77,000 megawatts of the country’s total electricity generation.
