Uzbekistan plans to borrow $150 million from WB by end of year

The Government of Uzbekistan plans to borrow loans worth a total of around $150 million from the World Bank (WB) by the end of 2011 for the implementation of two investment projects, a source in the Government told Trend on Wednesday.

The Government and WB experts currently explore the opportunity of WB financial participation in the project of launch of automated electricity metering system (AEMS) and the sanitation improvement project in Karakalpakstan.

As for the AEMS, there is explored the opportunity of WB financial assistance in the amount of $90 million-$110 million, and as for the sanitation improvement project- $38 million.
The source did not mention total value of the Karakalpak project as it is under preparation, and consultations between the Government and WB experts over the project are underway.

As reported, the AEMS and the launch schedule of AEMS with the total designed value of $364.6 million were approved by the Government of Uzbekistan in 2009.

The program is to be financed at the expense of Uzbekenergo own assets in the amount of $230.5 million and foreign loans in the total amount of $134 million.
