The next meeting of the Azerbaijan - Japan Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation will be held in Tokyo on February 26, the Azerbaijani Communications and IT Ministry told Trend on Feb. 20.
The intergovernmental commission is headed by Azerbaijani Deputy Prime Minister Abid Sharifov.
Deputy Minister Iltimas Mammadov will represent the commission, the ministry said.
A delegation of the Azerbaijani government plans to discuss prospects of cooperation with Japan in the different branches of the economy, including cooperation in the ICT field.
Until now, Japanese companies were mainly involved in the energy projects. However, their interest in cooperation in such areas as petro-chemistry, oil and gas refining, energy saving, medicine, high-tech and space industry, has recently increased
"Azerbaijan is considering cooperation with Japan in the field of high technology and in particular in the field of innovative products with their further delivery to the regional markets," the ministry said.
The cooperation was secured by a memorandum of understanding signed in Baku last week.
The trade turnover between Azerbaijan and Japan amounted to $310.92 million as of 2013 increasing by 27.4 percent compared to 2012. The growth was ensured as a result of increasing Azerbaijan's export operations by 23.5 times up to $22.56 million, while imports of Japanese goods rose by 18.6 percent up to $288.36 million.
Japan imports oil and oil products and non-ferrous metals such as lead and aluminium from Azerbaijan.
Japan exports ferrous metals (steel), household appliances and automobiles to Azerbaijan.
