TEHRAN, Iran, Dec.23

Trend:

Iran should be able to provide affordable housing for 14 million worker families, said the country's Minister of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare Mohammad Shariatmadari, Trend reports via ILNA.

He also mentioned that the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour and Social Welfare and the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development signed a memorandum that would help move the matter forward.

The minister said that in order to push the housing project forward, resources of banks, including Refah bank, Tose`e Taavon Bank, Maskan bank and the State Pension Fund, should be used.

“The Ministry of Roads and Urban Development is obliged to provide free lands for this housing project,” he said.

Shariatmadari also said that some 43 million people are covered by Iran's social security insurance, which is important in the matter of housing construction for workers.

Shariatmadari said that 40 percent of the registrants in the government-sponsored "National Housing Initiative" were of the working class.

Registration for the government-sponsored "National Housing Initiative", aimed at creating a total of 400,000 affordable homes, began on Nov. 6 in 10 provinces across the country.
