Turkey would play a key role in future energy supplies to Europe, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said in an interview with Reuters.
"Resources coming from Russia being complemented by supply from the Caucasus, Central Asia, Iran if the political environment is suitable and the Middle East would be the normal option," he said.
New diversifying sources of oil and gas would make sense to European countries. Turkey becomes a very important alternative energy route, he said.
In particular, gas supplies from Azerbaijan and Central Asia to European markets have great importance. The European Union put forward several projects for gas supply. One of the major projects of the Southern Energy Corridor is the Nabucco gas pipeline project. It aims to diversify the sources and routes of gas supplies to Europe, bypassing Russia.
All the projects of the Southern Corridor are partially focused on Azerbaijan's gas. All promising gas pipeline projects (ITGI, TAP and Nabucco) are tied to the territory of Turkey.
