Trend:

Uzbekistan is using 23-24 percent of the available hydropower potential, that is, hydropower plants of the country generate about 7 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year, which is only 13 percent of the total electricity generated in the country, according to the information of Uzbekhydroenergo, Uzbek media reported.

It is necessary to bring this figure to 16 percent in the next three years by building 12 big, medium and small hydropower plants.

For this, gradual replacement of outdated equipment at 18 out of 36 hydropower plants operating in the structure of the company is expected.

As part of the decree of Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev “On Approving the List of Investment and Infrastructure Projects for 2018” dated February 3, 2018, the joint-stock company Uzbekhydroenergo should implement 11 major investment projects worth $354.8 million this year, $205.6 million of which account for foreign loans, and $149.2 million account for the company's share.

The company noted that the technically feasible hydropower potential of Uzbekistan is estimated at approximately 27.4 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

In 2017, hydropower plants operating in Uzbekistan generated 7.93 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity, that is, about 29 percent of the potential is used. The remaining hydropower resources of Uzbekistan amount to 19.47 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.
