At least 10 opposition supporters were killed Wednesday during anti-government protests in the central Asian nation of Kyrgyzstan, a human rights activist told the Russian news agency Interfax.

Police reportedly shot the victims in front of the main government building in the capital Bishkek. Snipers had been posted on the roof of the building, which was stormed by a crowd on Wednesday, media outlets reported.

More than 100 people were reported injured, DPA reported.

Witnesses told the German Press Agency dpa that the demonstrators were demanding the resignation of authoritarian President Kurmanbek Bakiyev.

The arrests of 10 leading opposition politicians, including former prime minister and presidential candidate Almazbek Atambayak, had further aggravated protesters.
