BAKU, Azerbaijan, February 12. The gas supply to Iran's Thermal Power Plants (TPPs) has increased by 15 percent since the beginning of the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2024, through February 10, 2025), compared to the same period last year (from March 21, 2023, through February 11, 2024), Trend reports via the country's Ministry of Petroleum.
The ministry made the remark commenting on statements regarding the gas supply of TPPs in the country and the interruptions in electricity distribution due to gas shortages.
According to the ministry, it ensures no shortages in the gas supply to the country's TPPs.
'' There has been a significant increase in gas consumption in residential areas and small commercial establishments during the winter, the ministry pointed out.
For example, on December 16, 2024, gas consumption in residential and small commercial establishments in Iran reached 671 million cubic meters, and by February 10, 2025, it rose to 681 million cubic meters, the ministry explained, the statement of ministry said.
The ministry also declared that over 90 percent of Iran's gas production reserves are located in the southern regions of the country. More than 70 percent of the gas consumption in residential and small commercial establishments is in the northern part of the country.
''Given the existing potential, there may be a slight decrease in the volume of gas supplied to thermal power plants during peak times when gas is transferred from the south to the north, '' the ministry mentioned.
The ministry added that if fuel consumption in the country's TPPs, especially those located in the south, is properly managed, and if electricity from southern plants is transmitted more efficiently to the national grid, no issues should arise with electricity distribution.
To note, during the winter, Iran's gas consumption reaches a peak (in some cases, up to 850 million cubic meters daily).
Data from the National Iranian Oil Company shows that the country's gas production is 1.1 bcm per day.
Meanwhile, Iran's total hydrocarbon reserves amount to 1.2 trillion barrels. With existing technology and equipment, Iran can extract 340 billion barrels, but it is only utilizing about 30 percent of its reserves, with 70 percent remaining untapped underground.
Iran's electricity production potential is approximately 95 gigawatts, and efforts are underway to increase this potential to 100 gigawatts.
