British fashion designer Alexander McQueen hanged himself in a wardrobe at his London home after leaving a suicide note, an inquest into the death of the 40-year-old was told Wednesday.

The talented and highly-celebrated designer was found dead in his flat in London's affluent Mayfair district last Thursday - just days after his mother had died, DPA reported.

A post mortem examination conducted at Westminster Coroner's Court in London found that he died as a result of asphyxiation and hanging, the inquest heard.

His body was identified by his sister on the day he was found.

The fashion designer killed himself on the eve of the funeral of his mother, Joyce, who died at the age of 75.

A post mortem conducted Monday showed that McQueen had died from asphyxia and hanging, coroner's officer Lynda Martindill said.

Detective Inspector Paul Armstrong, who led the police investigations into the case, said there were no suspicious circumstances in McQueen's death.

A note found at the scene and it was handed to the coroner for further examination.
