The United States on Monday called for a "swift" investigation of the shooting of a Lebanese cleric who opposed Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and urged restraint after protest clashes broke out overnight, DPa reported.

"We are concerned by the security situation in Lebanon following the shooting," said Mark Toner, acting spokesman for the US State Department.

He said the US welcomed the commitment by the Lebanese military and government to a "swift and transparent investigation of the shooting incident" and called on all parties to exercise "restraint and respect for Lebanon's security and stability."
