Tehran, Iran, Sept.21

Trend:

Yo Chang Hian, the new South Korean ambassador to Tehran, said Korean firms have not cut trade ties with Tehran despite US sanctions.

“The reality is that Korean firms are eager to stay in Iran despite Washington’s unilateral sanctions,” Hian said during a meeting with members of Tehran Chamber of Commerce Industries Mines and Agriculture, ISNA reported on September 21.

Despite the sanctions and media hype, South Korean firms have no plans to suspend their trade ties with Tehran, he added.

“Many Korean companies are reliant on Iran’s oil and petrochemical industries,” the envoy said.

He said Seoul was in talks with the US government to receive exemptions on Washington's upcoming sanctions on oil imports from Iran.

US President Donald Trump had in May withdrawn from the 2015 nuclear accord with Iran, re-imposing economic sanctions against the Persian Gulf nation. Some sanctions took effect from August 6 while those affecting the oil and banking sectors will start from November 4.
