Azerbaijan to attend meeting of OPEC on Dec. 17 in Algeria

Russia and also three more countries, which are not members of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), will participate at the meeting of cartel on Dec. 17 in Algeria, Head of OPEC, Shakib Khelil, said. OPEC also invited Oman, Azerbaijan and Syria for the participation at the meeting, Associated Press reported.

Today the governor of OPEC from Iran, Mohammed Ali Khatibi, said that OPEC needs to decrease the excess of oil in the market, and for this the cartel needs the support of the countries, which are not its members. Khatibi noted that the OPEC member states agreed with this opinion, and the support of the countries, which are not members of organization, is now necessary, since without their participation the decrease of the volumes of oil production can not have proper influence on the market.

Last time OPEC made a decision to reduce the volumes of oil production during the extraordinary meeting of cartel on Oct. 24, 2008. The volumes of oil production were lowered by 1.5mln barrels per day as compared to the production index in September 2008.

The next meeting of OPEC will take place on Dec. 17, 2008 in Oran (Algeria), RBK reported.
