Azerbaijan is likely to adopt the second program on establishment of alternative energy sources, Deputy Minister for Industry and Energy Gulmammad Javadov said.

"The country concluded implementing the first program and established an agency for alternative energy within the ministry. Another program can be designed in this field further when the agency sets up its activities," Javadov said.

Javadov said that electricity production capacity of Azerbaijan exceeds 20 billion kilowatts a year.

"Now there is a tendency of save use of electricity and cut in electricity expenses. If the capacities are increased, they will be directed at export," Javadov said.

Under presidential decree dated July 16, 2009 the state agency for alternative and recoverable energy sources have been established at the Energy Ministry.

Azerbaijan must work over creating alternative energy sources and first. It is necessary to build mini hydropower stations over small rivers in the country, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said in his final speech at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on the results of socio-economic development in the first half of 2009.

This field can also involve both local and foreign companies. The head of state believes the country must conduct practical work to produce wind and solar energy via pilot projects to be implemented through the public budget next year.
