The Baku Metro is building a powerful ventilation infrastructure at its stations, Bakhtiyar Mammadov, spokesperson for the company, told Trend on July 29.
According to Mammadov, the metro stations are equipped both with forced, and natural ventilation systems.
"Work in the field of natural ventilation started last year. For this, Austrian-made dampers (valves and plates that stop or regulate the air flow inside the duct) were purchased,” he said. “At three metro stations, 84 new dampers have already been installed, and the similar renovation will be carried out at other stations and metro lines.”
“Besides, the installation of new dampers requires renovating the ventilation system itself in accordance with world standards, which have begun to be introduced in our country," the spokesperson said.
He noted that a complete replacement of the ventilation system is necessary on the ‘red’ and ‘green’ lines of the Baku metro.
“As part of the renovation, new dampers have already been installed on these branches in nine mines. Their advantage is that they work synchronously with the ventilation system,” Mammadov further noted. “When a ventilator stops working, the dampers remain constantly open. Air passing through the mines is delivered to the required levels and stations through the dampers.”
“Based on the data for 2019, we have renovated the metro infrastructure, including the ventilation system,” he added.
The spokesperson stressed that when purchasing new fans, all technical characteristics of the Baku metro and the necessary requirements are taken into account.
“The current ventilation system is three times more powerful than the previous ones and is controlled on the basis of information and communication technologies from a single center. To effectively control the ventilation system, the necessary optical and fiber-optic lines were additionally installed,” Mammadov pointed out. “Now the ventilation system of the metro is regulated by 16 parameters, and the dispatcher can independently change the power of the ventilator, turn it on or off.”
According to him, the renovation of the ventilation system is primarily related to fire safety.
"The main task of the ventilators is to remove smoke and provide the metro with clean air. They also help protect the tunnels from corrosion," concluded Mammadov.
