Chairman of the Lithuanian Chamber of Commerce met the Chairman of the Tehran Chamber of Commerce, Mines, and Agriculture Masoud Khansari in Tehran.

Pointing to Iran 's capabilities in the petrochemical field, Khansari said Lithuania could become a trade partner to Iran SHANA news agency reported Sept. 16.

The country of Lithuania can become for Iran a gateway to Europe, he said, adding that despite current scanty trade relations, the two countries can improve their turnover greatly.

"The fact that the two countries have a low volume of trade is that they do not have ample knowledge of each other. The more the economic sectors of both countries know each other, the greater the volume of economic and trade relations will become," he stated.

The Lithuanian representative, for his part, pointed out that five years ago he signed a cooperation agreement with his then Iranian counterpart, but international sanctions prevented the chance to materialize the agreement.

Now, as the pressure is decreased, it is hoped that the two countries engage in more robust relations, he said.

An agreement has been signed with an Iranian petrochemical company, whose director is going to travel to Lithuania to meet the prime minister and arrange affairs for starting Iran-Lithuania trade relations, he said.

President Hassan Rouhani's administration has been seeking ties with Lithuania since soon after he took office. In December 2013, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht Ravanchi and Acting Lithuanian Foreign Minister Andreas Bildguvich met in Vilnius to explore avenues for bolstering mutual cooperation between the two countries.
