Azerbaijani Court Not Allows Sounding Azan at Abu Bakr Mosque

Azerbaijan, Baku, 20 November / Trend corr. S.Kazimli/ Azerbaijani court did not allow sounding azan at Abu Bakr Mosque during praying.

On 27 October, Narimanov District Police Station appealed against the court decision resuming the activity of Abu Bakr Mosque and the appeal says that it is inexpedient to resume activity of mosque, since they have information that sabotages will be committed at Abu Bakr Mosque. 

Javanshir Suleymanov, a lawyer and representative of the Community of Religious Men of Narimanov District, applied to get permission for azan at Abu Bakr Mosque during praying at the Narimanov District Court on 18 November.

The court rejected this request.

Religious men and people living near to the mosque gave testimony at the court and expressed their agreement to resume activity of the mosque. They said that people coming to the mosque for praying do not prevent local residents. Religious men expressed their agreement to pray under police's supervision.

Plaintiffs and defendants made speech at the court after testimonies.

Suleymanov asked time to be prepared to speech. Therefore, the procedure was postponed to 25 November.

The blast caused by the hand grenade thrown to Abu Bakr mosque by unknown man at 08:50p.m. on 17 August 2008, killed two and injured 19. The activities of the mosque were suspended after the blast. Elnur Bakhshiyev, of Sumgayit city, charged of committing an act of terrorism in the mosque, has been arrested.
