Head of the State Committee for Religious Associations of Azerbaijan Hidayat Orujov supports an end to the hostilities in the Gaza Strip.

"All regions across the world favor peace," he told Trend on Jan. 6. "We hope the conflict in the Middle East will be solved through negotiations."

The Israeli Air Force shelled Gaza Dec. 27. After a 6-month truce between Hamas and Israel expired Dec. 19, Hamas began bombing Sderot and Ashkelon when four Palestinians were killed.

The Israeli military offensive has claimed 550 lives and injured 2,500. Hamas has fired roughly 60 missiles on Sderot and Ashkelon in response to the Israeli military operations. The Israeli government announced a state of emergency in these towns.

Israel launched the ground offensive in Gaza Jan. 3.

Orujov said civilians are always the true victims of such conflicts.

"I hope the situation is resolved through discussion, not violence," Orujov added.
