BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 9. The European Union is committed to strengthening energy security in Central Asia through a mix of strategic investments, policy dialogue, and collaborative projects, an EU spokesperson told Trend in a recent interview.

The spokesperson emphasized that the EU is actively supporting enhanced cooperation in the region, particularly through the Team Europe Initiative on Water, Energy and Climate Change. "This initiative, which has already gathered around 710 million euros in initial funding, aims to manage water and energy resources sustainably while addressing environmental challenges and combating climate change in Central Asia". The EU spokesperson stated, "This initiative will play a vital role in tackling the most pressing environmental and energy challenges in the region".

In addition to supporting ongoing projects, the EU is also considering investments in key infrastructure projects in the region, including the Rogun Hydropower Plant in Tajikistan. The spokesperson noted, "Hydropower projects are crucial for regional stability, especially given the importance of water management in inter-regional relations." The EU views these projects as fundamental for ensuring a stable and sustainable energy future for Central Asia.

The EU is also exploring potential investments in other Central Asian countries, such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan. The spokesperson added, "We are keen to engage with these countries to ensure that the region’s energy security is bolstered through cooperation and infrastructure development".

Beyond financial investments, the EU also plays an active role in facilitating "policy dialogue and cooperation" with Central Asian countries on energy security issues. "We are working closely with the governments of Central Asia to ensure that we not only provide financial support but also share technical expertise and promote collaborative policy solutions," the spokesperson concluded.
