BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 24. In the third quarter of 2024, the EU’s domestic gas production was recorded at 7.8 bcm, marking a 13-percent year-on-year decline compared to 3Q2023 (8.9 bcm), Trend reports.
According to the data obtained from the European Commission, this also marked a 29-percent drop compared to 3Q2022 (11 bcm).
Despite this decrease, domestic gas production slightly increased by 2 percent quarter-on-quarter, showing modest recovery signs from earlier in the year.
The EU’s domestic gas production has been in decline over the years due to diminishing reserves, stringent environmental policies, and a shift toward renewable energy. This year’s 3Q production accounted for 14 percent of total gas consumption, a slight improvement over 2Q2024 (12 percent) but lower than 3Q2023 (16 percent) and 3Q2022 (19 percent).
The decrease in production reflects the region’s broader energy transition and the reduced role of fossil fuels in meeting energy needs.
Monthly domestic production followed a stable pattern throughout 3Q2024, with production levels staying below 3,000-4,000 mcm per month.
