BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 12. Azerbaijan Railways CJSC (ADY) has carried out large-scale work on constructing the Astara terminal (in the territory of Iran), one of the main elements of the North-South international transport corridor, Trend reports via the company.
According to the company, the terminal's design work is 85 percent complete, while construction and installation work is 72.4 percent. An 8.3 km railway line has been laid from the Astara station to the border with Iran, and a railway bridge has been built across the Astarachay river. The project envisages the construction of seven bridges. The construction of one of the bridges has been fully completed, and the construction of the others has been completed by 90 percent.
In 2023, 692,000 tons of cargo were transshipped at the Astara terminal, and more than 777,000 tons in 2024. After the full completion of the terminal's construction, it is planned to raise its annual transshipment capacity to 3.5 million tons.
The Astara terminal will ensure an increase in cargo transportation volumes and prompt implementation of operations along the North-South international transport corridor.
Following the agreement reached between the governments of Azerbaijan and Iran, the construction of the Astara terminal began in 2017.
The terminal is located in Astara, Iran, 1.4 km from the Azerbaijani-Iranian border. The territory of the terminal, which is being built by ADY, was leased to Azerbaijan by the Iranian government for 25 years.
