Azerbaijan has imported food products worth $1.26 million from Latvia in January-March this year, Agriculture Minister Ismet Abbasov told journalists after meeting with his Latvian counterpart Laimdot Strauyum on Thursday.
"Azerbaijan imported food products worth $4.75 million from Latvia last year, while Latvia imported products worth $864,000 during the same period," the minister said.
Further steps for the development of agricultural sector were defined during the discussion of the current level of bilateral cooperation in it:
- adaptation to EU requirements in various areas of agriculture, including food safety and quality standards in the field of veterinary and phytosanitary requirements, because Latvia is a member of the EU, as well as the coordination and exchange of experiences on implementation of joint projects in this direction;
- acceleration of the process of signing agreements on cooperation in the veterinary field between the Ministries of Agriculture of Azerbaijan and Latvia;
- acceleration the signing of an agreement on cooperation in plant quarantine and protection between the Ministries of Agriculture of Azerbaijan and Latvia;
- exchange of information on the organization of marketing, certification and production of ecologically clean agricultural products;
- expansion of relations between agricultural producers and entities engaged in recycling;
- exchange of experience in seed production, testing, selection of new varieties of seeds;
- exchange of experience in the areas of selection and breeding work, registration of animals and the mechanism of activity centers for artificial insemination;
- organization of joint exhibitions and fairs of agricultural goods between the two countries and holding business forums;
- establishment of cooperation between the agricultural universities of the two countries and holding of a joint research.
A memorandum of understanding and cooperation has been signed today after the meeting of agriculture ministers of Azerbaijan and Latvia.
