BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 12. The analytical company Clarksons Research foresees that by 2030, a whopping 20 percent of the world's fleet will be cruising on alternative, eco-friendly fuel, Trend reports.

On the other hand, the analytical company is of the opinion that the world is in dire need of pouring more money into port infrastructure in order to fuel ships with "green" fuel.

"At the moment, 273 ports with liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering capabilities and 251 ports with onshore electricity connections have been put into operation or are in the process of formation in the world. However, only 29 ports have bunkering capabilities for methanol, an environmentally friendly fuel. Of the total tonnage of the world fleet, 33.5 percent, or 8713 ships, have on board energy-saving technologies," the research noted.

The good news is that by the first half of 2024, ships sailing on alternative fuel had taken the cake, representing roughly a third of all orders worldwide and a staggering 41 percent in terms of tonnage.

"In particular, 109 orders were placed for the construction of LNG-powered ships, 49 orders for methanol-powered ships, 15 orders for ammonia-powered ships, and four ships for hydrogen-powered ships. About 50 percent of the current global ship order book is capable of operating on alternative fuels," Clarksons Research noted.

To note, the vessel is being built at a shipyard in Azerbaijan for the needs of SOCAR, which will be able to charge batteries in the engine from renewables.

The issue of the production and use of hydrogen as a marine fuel is also under scrutiny.
